A chapel is said to have stood in Wintelre as early as the Middle Ages. From 1320, a document dates back to Johanna of Brabant giving permission to establish a militia to maintain and protect this Mariakapel . The chapel served as a small church but Wintelre did not have an independent parish.
A parish church was only built around 1570 and Wintelre became an independent parish. The church was then dedicated to St Willibrordus.
The Sacred Heart statue was placed around 1925 in a parkland next to the church, opposite the presbytery. The statue is a design by J. Dechin.
