Beer and craft
Although the last monks left the abbey in 2021, the tradition lives on. De Achelse Kluis is world-famous for its Achel beer. Until recently, this was one of the few authentic Trappist beers. Although it no longer carries that official title (as monks no longer oversee the brewing process), the beer is still brewed on site and served in the accompanying brasserie.
The abbey serves as an ideal starting or resting point for recreational visitors. It is located in the middle of the border park De Groote Heide, surrounded by:
-
The fens and forests of the Leenderbos.
-
The Valley of the Warmbeek, a beautiful babbling brook.
-
Vast cycling and hiking routes seamlessly connect the two countries.
