Established in 1930, De Hunnebergen Open-Air Theatre is the second-oldest open-air theatre in Brabant. It is run entirely by volunteers and is situated in the heart of the woods, close to the Belgian border. De Hunnebergen literally provides a stage for regional talent, nationally renowned artists and theatre companies from outside the region. And thanks to this constantly innovative and diverse programme, a wide audience finds its way to this wooded setting – especially since the refurbishment of the catering area! The recurring ‘Bier in het Bos’ event is particularly popular; a beer tasting in an unexpected location. “Beer in the woods! Delicious beers, a brilliant atmosphere! I’m asking: when’s the next one?!!”, said one enthusiastic visitor.

A varied programme
From theatre and comedy to musical performances for children (usually during the day), to performances for adults in the evenings and at weekends: De Hunnebergen offers a varied programme and, as a result, attracts a wide range of visitors. The extensive woodland in which the theatre is situated connects to the more than 1,000-hectare forest and heathland area of Boswachterij De Kempen. A visit can therefore be wonderfully combined with a cycle, walking, mountain bike or horse-riding trip through the green surroundings. Or with a visit to the Bakery Museum in nearby Luyksgestel.
An authentic cultural experience
‘The finest slice of culture in the Kempen forests’ offers cabaret, music, theatre and events from May to November. Take a seat on one of the benches under the trees and experience art and culture in nature in a unique and authentic way. As a foundation, De Hunnebergen runs entirely on the support of enthusiastic volunteers, and you can really feel it: “Lovely open-air theatre, in a fantastic location, with friendly volunteers who organise everything, and a lovely little bar to boot.”
And don’t worry about cancellations in bad weather: part of the grandstand can be covered easily and within a few minutes. Ideal in the rain, and as extra shelter alongside the many trees…
