Have you ever heard of the ‘Eight Blissful Places’ and the ‘Contente Mens’? These names are characteristic of the Kempen region. The ‘blessings’ were originally known as ‘selligheden’, eight typical Kempen villages whose names end in ‘sel’: Eersel, Steensel, Duizel, Knegsel, Netersel, Hulsel, Reusel and Wintelre (which, in proper Kempen dialect, is simply ‘Wijntersel’). Each of these villages has a lovely village centre, so they’re certainly worth a visit. The statuette of the‘Contente Mens’on the Markt in Eersel has become the symbol of the Kempen character. In the past, the people of the Kempen had to work hard for very little money.
