Does your heart lie with nature? - Discover it at the Big & Small Lake

The Big & Small Lake

The Grootmeer and Kleinmeer are originally natural fens. They are located in an area slightly higher than the surrounding area. Thousands of toads, frogs and salamanders live in the forest on the other side of the road. These migrate en masse to the Great Lake in spring to mate and then return. When crossing the road, they were then flattened in large numbers. In 2009/ 2010, seven amphibian tunnels were constructed under the Lakes Road. As a result, the amphibians can now cross by themselves with peace of mind.

An interesting building history... - Wintelre's church tower is positioned at an angle to the church. Moreover, building traces tell that a church stood against it at the front.

  • St Willibrordus church

In 1822, Wintelre closed the barn church era with the construction of a 'real' church, though still without a tower. This was not added until 1859. The bricks came from the immediate surroundings of the village; farmers baked them in field ovens. The Wintelre church tower is one of the earliest examples of a specific building style in our province, namely Kempen Gothic. Kempen Gothic is a building style that originated in the Kempen region in the 15th century and was widely used in the construction of churches there. As a result, it has a rarity value.
