Cartierheide is managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Forester Erik Schram is enthusiastic about his area: "On the Cartierheide, you will not only find vistas and a sense of freedom, but you can also bump into different animal species. The little fritillary, tree falcon and black woodpecker fly around and in summer you can see the viviparous lizard passing by. When the sun rises or dusk falls and you are very quiet, deer show themselves. The smooth snake also prowls around, although you have to walk very quietly and silently to spot it along your path. At the big fen, you look out over the water and its inhabitants. This is where I prefer to stand still. By the water, you have a good view of all kinds of birds and waterbirds. Spring and summer is the breeding season and you'll find a large gull colony at the fens as you walk. August has its own beauty. That's when you come for the blooming heather".
